Candombe

Candombe is a drum based musical style that originated from the African population of Montevideo. It is mostly based off of Bantu African drumming, though it does have some European influence as well as some bits of Tango.
Candombe started from ceremonial processions during African slavery in South America. It was seen as a threat to slave rulers who then tried to ban the music and dance in 1808.
A group of drummers called a cuerda perform the Candombe music using various drums called tamboriles: chico, piano, repique, bajo/bombo. A cuerda requires at least three drummers while a full cuerda can have as many as 50-100 drummers. (Candombe)
